A gate that opens fine but refuses to close is telling you something specific. Closing is the dangerous direction, so the safety system holds the gate open whenever it is not completely sure the path is clear. Almost always, something has made it unsure.
Work through these in order
1. The photo eyes, which is usually it
Your gate has at least one photo eye: a small sender and receiver pair facing each other across the opening, mounted on posts or on the gate frame. Break that infrared beam and the gate will not close.
Things that break the beam without anything obviously being in the way:
- A spider web across the lens. The single most common cause. Spiders like the warm housing and the insects the indicator light attracts, and they rebuild overnight
- Dust, pollen, or a water spot after sprinklers or rain
- Low sun straight into the receiver. If the fault only happens around sunrise or sunset, this is why
- A plant that has grown. Check at beam height, not eye height. A shrub adds a few inches in a season
- A misaligned bracket. A knock from a car door, a delivery, or a gardener's strimmer
What to do: wipe both lenses with a dry cloth, clear anything in the beam path, and look at the indicator lights on each unit. Most show a steady light when aligned and a flickering or dark one when not. If one is unhappy, loosen the mounting bolt and move it in very small increments until the light goes steady, then tighten.
2. The loop detector
Many driveway gates have a wire loop cut into the surface of the drive. It senses the metal mass of a vehicle. There are usually two: an exit loop that opens the gate as you drive up from inside, and a safety loop that holds the gate open while a car is still in the opening.
If a safety loop fails in the triggered state, the gate believes a car is permanently sitting in the gateway and will never close.
Signs it is the loop rather than the beam:
- The gate held open with nothing visible anywhere near the photo eyes
- An indicator LED lit on the loop detector module inside the control box
- The problem started after landscaping, resurfacing, or trenching across the driveway
- It began after heavy rain, which gets into a damaged loop wire
Loop detectors are modules in the operator's control box, and diagnosing whether the fault is the module or the buried wire needs test equipment. This one is ours rather than yours.
3. Force and limit settings
Operators learn where closed is and how much resistance is normal on the way there. Over time the gate changes. Hinges wear, a post settles, a slide gate's track collects grit, and the gate now needs more force than the operator was taught to expect.
The operator reads that extra resistance as an obstruction and stops or reverses, which is exactly what it should do.
Do not just turn the force up
It will make the symptom go away. It also removes the protection that stops a heavy powered gate on a person, a pet or a car bumper, and it hides a mechanical fault that is getting worse.
If the gate needs more force than it used to, find out why. The answer is usually a hinge, a roller, or a track, and it is a cheaper fix than the one that comes after.
4. Auto-close, or the lack of it
Worth ruling out early, because it costs nothing. Some gates never close on their own by design and only close on a command or a timer. If the timer setting was reset by a power cut, a board replacement, or someone in the control box, the gate is behaving exactly as configured.
Try closing it with the remote or keypad. If it closes on command but never by itself, the timer is the answer and not a fault at all.
5. Power and the control board
If nothing at all responds, check the breaker, and on a solar operator check the battery. Solar gate batteries have a service life, and a tired one often has just enough charge to open a gate and not enough to close it. A gate that works in the afternoon and fails in the morning fits that pattern well.

Leave it open, or force it shut?
If the gate is your property's security and it is stuck open, that matters and you should say so when you call.
Do not drag a powered gate closed by hand while it is still connected to the operator. On a slide gate that can strip the drive gear, and on a swing operator it can bend the arm. Most operators have a manual release, usually a key or a lever at the operator housing. Release it first, move the gate, and leave it released until it is looked at.
