San Diego does not have brutal winters, which makes the usual insulation sales pitch land badly. That does not mean an insulated door is a waste of money here. It means the reasons to buy one are different from the reasons in the brochure.
What R-value means
R-value measures resistance to heat flow. Higher means more resistance, so more insulation. It is the same scale used for wall and attic insulation, which makes it easy to compare.
Two things decide a door's R-value: how many layers it has, and what the insulating material is.

Polystyrene versus polyurethane
Polystyrene is rigid foam board cut to size and fitted into the door panels. Think of the foam in a coffee cup or packaging. It is the more economical option and it works, though there are gaps where the board does not meet the panel edges.
Polyurethane is injected as a liquid and expands to fill the whole cavity, bonding to both skins as it sets. It insulates better per inch of thickness, so a thinner layer does the job of a thicker polystyrene one. It also makes the door far more rigid, because the foam grips both steel skins rather than sitting loose inside the panel.
Published R-values vary a lot between manufacturers, and different companies measure differently. Treat the number as a comparison within one manufacturer's range rather than an exact figure to compare across brands.
When insulation earns its money here
Work down this list. If none apply to you, an uninsulated door is a defensible choice and you can spend the difference elsewhere.
- A room sits above or beside the garage. The strongest reason, and it applies whatever the climate
- The garage is attached and shares a wall with living space. The garage becomes a buffer instead of a heat sink
- You use the garage. Workshop, gym, office, band practice. An inland San Diego garage with a single-layer steel door becomes an oven on a summer afternoon
- Noise matters. This is the one people underestimate, and it is covered below
- You park a car you care about in there. Fewer temperature swings
If your garage is detached, used for storage, and nobody spends time in it, insulation is mostly buying you a quieter, sturdier door. That may still be worth it, and it is a different purchase from the one the brochure describes.
The two benefits nobody advertises
1. It is much quieter
An insulated door is quieter in two ways at once. The insulation damps the drumming noise a hollow steel panel makes, and the added rigidity stops the flex and rattle that a wide single-layer door produces every time it moves.
For anyone with a bedroom over the garage, this often matters more than the thermal number. Pair an insulated door with a belt drive opener and the difference from a single-layer door on a chain drive is dramatic.
2. It flexes less, so it lasts longer
A single-layer double door is a large, thin sheet of steel. It bows in the middle as it lifts. That flex works the hinges, the rollers and the track over thousands of cycles, and it is why wide single-layer doors often need struts added later.
A polyurethane-filled door is stiff by construction. Less flex, less wear on everything the door touches.
The mistake that breaks springs
Insulation adds weight. A door is only easy to lift because the springs are matched to its weight, so adding an insulation kit to an existing uninsulated door without re-sizing the springs leaves them overloaded from that day on.
They will still work. They will fail early, and the opener strains the whole time. If somebody insulated your door and nobody touched the springs, that is worth checking. More on spring life.
Retrofit kits versus an insulated door
Kits that add foam panels to an existing door exist and they are cheap. They do help a little with heat and noise.
What they do not do is make the door rigid, because the panels sit inside the frame rather than bonding to it. They also add weight, which brings the spring problem above. And they can trap moisture against the steel, which near the coast is not something you want. Salt air is already working on your door.
If the door is otherwise sound and you want a modest improvement cheaply, a kit is reasonable, as long as the springs get re-checked afterwards. If you want the noise and rigidity benefits, they come from the door itself.
Do not forget the gap under the door
A high R-value door with a perished bottom seal and no perimeter weather stripping leaks air around its edges. If you can see daylight along the bottom or sides with the door closed, that gap is doing more damage to your comfort than the difference between two insulation grades.
Replacing bottom seal and weather stripping is one of the cheapest jobs we do, and on plenty of doors it is the only thing actually needed.
